We are on a quest to go beyond Moore’s law and keep scaling advanced semiconductor packaging technologies on a system level.
Here's why: Miniaturization of electronic devices is a never ending process, to a large extent driven by the consumer demand for “smaller, faster and cheaper”.
Semiconductor components are the “bricks” in these products and are continuously getting more competent. The development of semiconductor components has for many years followed a pace known as “Moore’s law”.
However, Moore’s law will no longer be supported by today’s solutions and materials – the “red brick wall” is reached. Reducing the size of the transistors alone don’t do the trick anymore and the cost reduction in doing so is no longer a given fact.
This is why advanced semiconductor packaging technologies are emerging to solve performance scaling on a system level instead. And this is why the need for new disruptive material is here.
Our groundbreaking technology supports the semiconductor industry and the semiconductor packaging industry in meeting these new challenges. We facilitate the progress from pure planar 2D architecture to a much more compact and complex 2.5D and 3D architecture.
What we do
Smoltek specializes in the development of nanostructure fabrication technology to solve advanced materials engineering problems. We are literally pushing the limits for the scaling/miniaturization of the new wave of microelectronics. Within a number of areas carbon nanostructures can replace or enhance today’s different solutions.
While an impressive scaling effort of transistors have been the main focus for decades, less improvements have been made for the capacitor since the multilayer ceramic (MLCC) entered the scene. Until now.
Smoltek CNF-MIM capacitor technology is dramatically reducing the form factor to enable smarter placement, packaging and embedding of discrete capacitors as well as providing a way to directly integrate in IC with a much smaller 2D footprint blocking.
Our technology is also relevant in surface engineering and several other technological platforms and applications.
How we do it
Our patented and patent pending technology platform enables growth of carbon nanostructures on a CMOS compatible industrial platform at industry-compatible temperatures. The R&D is focused on engineering combinations of material stacks that enable the growth of carbon nanostructures on different substrates with the freedom to tailor the positioning and properties of the grown nanostructures.
A completely new and revolutionizing way to manufacture high performance, solid state capacitors with extreme form factor has been developed as a technology platform. This technology works for discrete component capacitors as well as for in-circuit directly integrated capacitors.
