# Smoltek patent No. 60 now granted

The new US patent pro­tects com­pact ener­gy stor­age devices based on our CNF-MIM capac­i­tor con­cepts. In this par­tic­u­lar patent, claims cov­er device struc­tures which may be on a sub­strate, or on an inter­pos­er, or con­nect­ed to an inte­grat­ed cir­cuit. One aspect of the patent also cov­ers the appli­ca­tion of ener­gy stor­age device where it is con­nect­ed to an inte­grat­ed cir­cuit and/​or a bat­tery like ener­gy source.

Minia­tur­ized or com­pact ener­gy stor­age devices e.g. capac­i­tors are in high demand in the field of today’s advanced pack­ag­ing archi­tec­tures for inte­grat­ed cir­cuits, for exam­ple com­mon­ly used for micro­proces­sors and oth­er het­ero­ge­neous­ly inte­grat­ed semi­con­duc­tors. The present patent­ed con­cepts are built on the need to improve cir­cuit per­for­mance by enabling smarter, com­pact ener­gy stor­age devices which in turn can enable more effi­cient pow­er man­age­ment solutions.

Smoltek’s inven­tions facil­i­tate inte­gra­tion of extreme­ly thin sol­id-state ener­gy stor­age devices, such as CNF-MIM capac­i­tors, clos­er to the inter­con­nec­tion points and pow­er rails of the active chips. The CNF-MIM tech­nol­o­gy offers industry’s small­est form­fac­tor for inte­grat­ed high-per­for­mance capac­i­tors, this by pro­vid­ing very high capac­i­tance per area at a frag­ment of height com­pared to today’s technologies.
