# The AI boom is creating a new bottleneck: power delivery

The race in AI has so far focused primarily on processors, data centers, and the availability of computing power. However, as processors become increasingly powerful, new limitations are emerging around the chip itself.

> ***One of these concerns power delivery.***

AI and HPC processors require vast amounts of power while also needing to handle rapid fluctuations in power demand. Consequently, the capacitors that stabilize the power supply are playing an increasingly critical role. They must deliver high electrical performance while occupying minimal space and being positioned as close as possible to the chip’s active components.

It is to address this growing need that Smoltek is introducing its CNF-MIM capacitor.

Global annual investment in data centers and AI amounts to approximately $500 billion. With each new generation of AI systems, there is an increase not only in the need for processing power but also in the demands placed on peripheral components and infrastructure.

The CNF-MIM capacitor has been developed to address precisely this trend. By growing carbon nanofibers on a substrate, Smoltek creates a three-dimensional structure with a vast active surface area. This enables the production of ultra-thin capacitors capable of combining high capacitance density and electrical performance with a very compact form factor.

From an investment perspective, however, the manufacturing method is equally compelling. Smoltek builds the nanostructure additively—atom by atom—rather than by removing material. Furthermore, the CNF-MIM capacitor requires only a single ALD process for the metallic coating, compared to the three or four processes needed for competing Deep Trench capacitors. The potential, therefore, lies not only in superior performance but also in a cost advantage during industrial-scale production.

The significant value for Smoltek arises when the technology can make the leap from development to commercial use.

That work is currently underway. Smoltek has signed non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with several major players in the semiconductor industry, and validation of the capacitor technology’s lifespan and reliability is ongoing. Furthermore, in collaboration with Taiwan’s ITRI, the company has established a process for manufacturing small volumes for testing and customer projects.

At the same time, the business model is designed to be scalable without requiring Smoltek to build up global mass-production capabilities. The company aims to sign service and licensing agreements with established capacitor manufacturers, generating revenue through sources such as upfront payments and ancillary services as the technology is implemented by customers and partners.

With 98 granted patents across 21 patent families, the technology and manufacturing processes also benefit from extensive intellectual property protection.

> For the investor, the question is therefore relatively simple to formulate: ***can Smoltek’s nanotechnology become a commercially validated solution for a growing bottleneck in the AI industry?***

If customer validation confirms that the CNF-MIM capacitors can meet the escalating power supply demands of next-generation AI and HPC systems, Smoltek could position itself within a global value chain where investments already run into the hundreds of billions of dollars—and where the need for improved power supply is expected to grow alongside AI development for years to come.
