Characterization and Reliability Engineer

Are you an experienced and hands-on Characterization and Reliability Engineer? Apply today!

Smoltek Semi AB is pioneering ultra-thin carbon nanofiber-based metal-insulator-metal (CNF-MIM) capacitor technology. To accelerate our technology platform towards robust, high-yield products, we are looking for a hands-on Reliability & Characterization Engineer to take ownership of the electrical characterization and reliability assessment of our ALD-based dielectric stacks and CNF-MIM capacitors.

This is a lab-centric and data-driven role where you will work closely with process, materials, and device colleagues to understand performance, identify failure modes, and drive design and process improvements.

You will directly report to the CTO.

What you will do:

  • Own and develop the electrical characterization methodology for CNF-MIM capacitors including:
    • C–V, I–V, breakdown, and leakage measurements
    • Frequency-dependent characterization and loss measurements
    • Temperature-dependent characterization
  • Design and execute reliability test plans for CNF-MIM capacitors and dielectric stacks, including:
    • Time-dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB)
    • Endurance and cycling tests and retention measurements
    • High-temperature storage / HTOL-like tests and thermal cycling
    • Evaluation of stability vs. bias, temperature, and environment
  • Analyze measurement and reliability data using appropriate statistical tools:
    • Weibull analysis, confidence intervals, and lifetime extrapolation
    • Correlation of reliability metrics with process and structural parameters
    • Clear visualization and communication of trends, outliers, and failure mechanisms
  • Contribute to the setup, maintenance, and continuous improvement of:
    • Electrical test benches (parameter analyzers, LCR meters, probers, etc.)
    • Automated test scripts and data pipelines (e.g. Python)
    • Internal reliability test standards and documentation
  • Contribute to development of ALD dielectric stacks (e.g. Al₂O₃, HfO₂, ZrO₂, laminates) tailored for high-capacitance CNF-MIM devices, with focus on conformality over 3D/CNF structures, low leakage, and reliability.
  • Work with external labs/foundries when needed for advanced characterization or pilot production.
  • Contribute to IP generation through novelty in materials stacks and integration schemes.

What you bring:

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Solid State Physics, Materials Science, or similar.
  • Strong hands-on experience in electrical characterization of capacitors or related devices (MIM, MOS, DRAM, varactors, etc.).
  • Practical experience with reliability testing of dielectric stacks and/or capacitors, for example TDDB, BTI, stress tests, HTOL, cycling, or similar.
  • Proven ability to analyze reliability data and build/interpret lifetime models (e.g. Weibull)
  • Good understanding of High‑k dielectrics and metal-insulator-metal (MIM) or metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structures
  • Experience with ALD for high‑k dielectrics or barrier/seed/electrode layers
  • Comfortable working with semiconductor test equipment (parameter analyzers, SMUs, LCR meters, probers)
  • Basic project management skills – ability to define tasks, plan measurement and reliability campaigns, and communicate status, risks, and conclusions.
  • A structured way of working, with attention to detail, reproducibility, and traceability of data and results.

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge of carbon nanomaterials (CNT/CNF/graphene).
  • Familiarity with semiconductor process flows.
  • Experience working with external suppliers, foundries, or equipment vendors.
  • Patent or publication track record in thin films or MIM devices.

Why Smoltek?

Smoltek is working on a technology you won’t find just anywhere; we combine carbon nanofibers with advanced thin films to enable next-generation capacitors. Here you get to work close to the actual devices, see the impact of your experiments quickly, and drive the process flow rather than just following it. The team is small, skilled, and collaborative, so good ideas move fast. And you get to do all of this in a balanced work–life environment.
