Smoltek is awarded a new patent. This new patent has been granted in Taiwan, and is relating to the patent family in the direction of CNF-MIM capacitor applications on interposers. This also brings our patent portfolio to now comprise 72 granted patents.
Smoltek conducts operations in the development, industrialization and licensing of technology solutions, based on the company's patent-protected carbon nanofiber technology, for the semiconductor industry within the Group company Smoltek Semi. Its main focus is the industrialization and commercialization of the company’s ultra-thin CNF-MIM capacitors.
Smoltek's CEO Håkan Persson has bought 50,000 shares in Smoltek for just over SEK 1.35 million. The shares were purchased from the company's two largest owners, Finn Gramnaes (Gramtec Business Partner) and current CTO, Peter Enoksson.
Smoltek is awarded a new patent in Korea. This patent is the fourth one of the patent family in the direction of CNF-MIM based compact energy storage on interposers. This also means that our global patent portfolio now comprises 71 granted patents.
Smoltek has recruited Farzan Ghavanini as new Chief Technology Officer (CTO), who will assume the position on April 1 2022. He will then succeed Peter Enoksson, who has been acting CTO for Smoltek since 20 September 2021.
The evaluation license agreement that Smoltek signed in April 2020 with a global manufacturer of electronic components has been extended further. Smoltek has achieved proof-of-concept for high-performing, nanofiber-based cell material for PEM-electrolyzers. In our laboratory we have demonstrated that the cell material fulfills several important performance and durability requirements, including very low contact resistance, which potential industrial partners have stated that they want to test before a collaboration regarding the continued development can be initiated.
Smoltek Innovation's efforts to develop a unique and high-performance nanofiber-based cell material for electrolyzers used in fossil-free hydrogen production continues to develop according to plan. Dialogues are now ongoing with the aim of signing a collaboration agreement with a major manufacturer for the continued development of the concept.
A main goal for Smoltek Semi is to develop an industrial process for mass production of discrete CNF-MIM capacitors at contract manufacturers (foundry), including a specially designed machine for large-scale production of carbon nanofibers.
During the year Smoltek has installed two new equipment systems for enhancing the R&D work. This will give the company long-term benefits with increased opportunities of technology development and cost efficiency.

Smoltek has been granted three new patents since the start of the year. The patents are related to three different families: Interconnects, Assembly platform and Compact energy storage interposer. This makes our patent portfolio to now comprise 68 granted patents in total.
Hydrogen has proven to be a key to storing renewable energy and making heavy industry carbon-free. But there is a catch. The hydrogen is produced by electrolysis. Conventional alkaline electrolysis has poor efficiency. And the much more high-performing polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis requires rare earth metals. This is where Smoltek's technology comes in. Our solution, presented in this whitepaper, makes the electrodes in PEM electrolysis up to three times more efficient while reducing the amount of precious metal needed.

Smoltek announces that the license agreement, signed with a global manufacturer of electronic components for its technical and commercial evaluation of Smoltek’s capacitor technology, will be further extended until the end of August 2021. The extended joint project will continue with the aim of making it possible for the customer to enter into a commercial licensing agreement with Smoltek.
Hydrogen will play a key role in a number of industries, not least in providing the industries with so-called "green electricity", as part of Europe's energy transition to climate neutrality. But someone must also produce the huge amounts of hydrogen that will be required to meet the growing needs. At the moment Smoltek Innovation AB is testing its carbon nanofiber based technology, which may drastically increase productivity in hydrogen production at a lower cost than current technology.
The announced project within the framework of Vinnova's program "Smarter electronic systems” has been completed according to plan. Smoltek will now continue the work to achieve integration of CNF-MIM capacitors on 200 and 300 mm wafers.
